Brilliant Bonfire and Fireworks Display

Bridlington Lion President (left) and Mayor Cyril Marsburg (right) light the bonfire

BRIDLINGTON LIONS today held their annual bonfire and fireworks event at Limekiln Lane.

Thousands of people turned out to see the amazing display of colours and noise that lit up the 5th of November night sky.

Added to the display there were burgers, hotdogs, brandy snap and jacket potatoes. The Lions set up a stall to serve tea, coffee and soup. There was also a childrens tombola, flashing novelties and a childrens ride.

Bridlington Mayor Councillor Cyril Marsburg lit the fire with Lion President John Bayne. It took a few minutes for the fire to really get started but when it did the fire quickly consumed all the wood that the Lions had spend most of the morning building into a bonfire.

A professional firework display followed 30 minutes later giving people a chance to get in to see the amazing display the lit up the night sky.

Celebrate Guy Fawkes Night with the Lions

BRIDLINGTON residents will once again be able to enjoy one of the biggest fireworks displays in the area thanks to the town’s Lions Club.

The gates will open at the Limekiln Lane car park at 6pm on November 5, with the bonfire lit at 7pm followed by the fireworks extravaganza bursting into life at 7.15pm.

Bridlington Lions Club have organised the stunning annual display for decades and stage it as a community event to help families celebrate the season in safety.

The club does not run it as a fund-raising exercise but do try to cover the considerable costs of the event which run into thousands of pounds.

Despite this, the Lions have lowered the admission charge this year to £1 for adults – less that half of the £2.50 charged last year – and small children will be admitted free. It is an attempt to encourage even more people to turn out and enjoy the events area with its novelty stalls and music, as well as an incentive to those who watch it from the street and the clifftops to make a donation to the charity.

Peter Jay from Bridlington Lions Club explains: “We do always try to cover the cost of the fireworks which has been a struggle in recent years.

“We sincerely ask that all the many people who watch from the Cliff top and Limekiln Lane to please help us by making a donation in the collectors’ buckets.

“This super event is paid for only by your Lions Club, not the local authority.”

• Local residents and commercial contractors are invited to take timber to the bonfire site on November 5 between 8am and 11am only.

St John Ambulance Cadets and Badgers

Bridlington Lions President John Bayne visited the St John Ambulance Cadets and Badgers on Wednesday evening at Christ Church on Quay Road.

Cadets marched in to the room and were inspected by Lion President. Sandra one of the leaders at St Johns gave a talk on what the Cadets and Beavers did and what they have done in the past year.

The President then presented the group with a new laptop projector which will allow them to learn first aid from videos made by headquarters rather than relying on books and pamphlets for instruction.

About St John Ambulance Cadets and Badgers:

Cadet programme

Guided by youth leaders, Cadets take part in an interactive and full programme, working towards their Grand Prior Award. The programme enables young people to learn important life skills in a fun and safe environment, but with challenge and excitement appropriate to their age.

Cadets can choose from over seventy different subjects to help complete their award. These range from Fire prevention and Photography, to Sports and first aid.

Younger Cadets learn first aid skills through our training course for young people while older Cadets can undertake a community first aid or first aid at work course. Cadets can put their first aid and other communication skills into practice by providing first aid to the public at events or teaching first aid to other young people and adults.

Badgers take part in a lively programme, working towards their Super Badger Award. The programme has been developed to enable young people to learn important life skills in a fun and safe environment.

Badgers can choose from fifteen subjects to help complete their award. These range from Creative and Active, to Healthy and Caring.

Once a Badger has completed their membership paw, they move onto their bronze paw, which is awarded after completing three subjects. A further three subjects will gain the silver paw and another three for the gold paw. A Badger becomes a super Badger when they have completed twelve subjects.

Badger programme

Badgers learn important first aid skills through their Super Badger Award and various first aid courses. Badgers can get a really cool black and white uniform which they can wear in the Sett and at some public events.

Lions World Sight Day

Focusing Attention on Preventing Blindness and Improving Sight

Bridlington Lions took part in World Sight day at the Promenades Shopping Centre. A group of Lions members set up stall and gave out leaflets and information highlighting issues  that people can have with their eyes and in doing so helping to prevent blindness and poor vision caused by various forms of eye disease.

For more than 12 years, Lions World Sight Day, held annually in October, has focused attention on eliminating preventable blindness and improving sight. On World Sight Day, Lions clubs around the world conduct special sight-related projects including:

  • Collecting eyeglasses
  • Conducting vision and diabetes screenings
  • Planning educational programs to inform their communities about the importance of eye health – and diseases such as diabetes that can impair sight

International World Sight Day Event

Lions Clubs International also sponsors an annual international event on World Sight Day. On October 9, 2011, Lions celebrated World Sight Day in Shenzhen, China. During this event, Lions screened and provided eyeglasses to thousands of under served people and inaugurated the Lions Low Vision Rehabilitation Clinic.

Lions Scheme Helps School Pupils Cope with Loss

Bridlington Lions Club is supporting local schools in helping their pupils understand about loss, change and bereavement.

The club is supporting a national Life Changes project which works with schools to teach pupils about coping with death.

It is aimed at helping pupils aged 3 to 11 year of age and encourages them to express their feelings in the wake of a death in their family or community and advises teachers on ways to discuss the sensitive topic with their whole class.

Of 16 local primary schools offered the programme by the Lions club 14 have taken it up and Peter Jay of Bridlington Lions said this indicates the importance of such a service in the area.

He said “The very said and tragic recent fire resulting in the death of three young children is a prime example of the need for activity and counselling for helping young children come to terms with the loss if a friend, brother or sister or any other relative close to them.”

The Lions have been greatly assisted in the distribution of this important resource with the valued assistance of the Headteachers Forum.
